N mineralization experiment

July 27, 2006

Collected the buried bags which was installed April, 2006 in RWG, RWB and RCG and took out the soil from the bags.

Placed subsoil of the soil into bottles containing 100 ml 2M KCl and some subsoil transported to the lab and determined soil moisture.

Sampled 3 of 10cm intact soil cores in gas chambers of each site and placed it into poly-bags and buried again. Placed the subsoil into bottles containing 100ml 2M KCl and some subsoil transported to the lab to determine soil moisture.

Shanked the bottles about 1hr and allowed it to settle about 1hr and filterate the solution.

The solution was freezed and storaging in the freezer.

Gas sampling

June 23, 2006

Collected gas samples in all sites.

A soil moisture sensor was broken in LWB site, so there is only one site (LWG) soil moisture data.

C2H2 treatment previous experiment

June 22-23, 2006

Produced pure C2H2 gas from reaction of CaC2 and water.

Treated C2H2 10 K Pa to intact soil cores.

Sampled gas 3hr, 6hr, 12, 18hr and 24hr later after C2H2 treatment.

Intact soil core sampling

June 21, 2006

Sampled intact soil cores (1 m depth, n=3) using a jack hammer and a jack in the first gas sampling point of John Risdal farm site.

Moved to lab and top 0-10cm and bottom 90-100 cm soils were seperated.

Put the seperated soil into Mason jars and storaged in the lab cooler.

How to measure the headspace of a bottle containning soil core?

June 13, 2006

Conduct pressure transducer test to know headspace volume using tubes (known volume) and made several equations to estimate headspace of bottles containning soil core.
